Some things I would like to do in 2010
Dec. 31st, 2009 12:06 pmI've not made new year resolutions in the past, or at least not for a very long time, but I managed to do three 'resolution like things' this year, which I'm quite proud of (quit smoking, start getting in to work on time, and exercise regularly). I don't expect myself to do all of these things, but I'll come back next year and see how I did:
1. I want to keep up the exercise, at least three times a week, and by the end of the year run 10k and do at least one unassisted pull-up. I'm still very excited about how much I'm actually enjoying this, and may be a bit of a bore about it, especially if you run into me just after I've been to the gym and managed to do something new. Feel free to tell me if I'm doing so and I'll shut up (unless I live with you, in which case you're going to have to put up with it sometimes, sorry).
2. Have singing lessons (and actually practice inbetween them). People who know more about this than me - is it a bad idea to just pick someone off the internet, only doing so tells me that there's a singing tutor who works just around the corner from my office, so I could potentially have lessons at lunchtime, which would be ever so convenient.
3. Cook something new at least once a week - it doesn't just have to be a complete meal, a snack or a side with a familiar main dish is fine. I should make a list of these recipes, and try to reuse the ones I like.
4. Get enough sleep. I've told myself I'm allowed to buy myself some silk pyjamas if I can manage to get to bed by 11.30 on 4/5 schoolnights a week for 6 weeks, but I've been trying for a few months and not managed it yet. This would be a good thing to concentrate on first.
5. Drink less booze. Although my drinking is waaaaaay healthier than it used to be in terms of patterns and the effect it has on my life, it's still more than is physically healthy, and harder to cut down than I'm comfortable with. I've got some numbers to aim for, but I'm going to just try to cut down generally for now, and once I've got the sleep thing nailed I'll focus on this.
6. Read more, especially more non-fiction. I kept a track of what I was reading last year on library thing, and since I was aiming for 52 books I was quite pleased with the 61 I managed. Keeping track also encouraged me to read more challenging stuff (although there are plenty of comfort fiction re-reads which aren't on there). Next year I shall aim for 75, 25 of which are non-fiction.
7. Get in better control of my finances. I'm not sure if I managed a single month this year where I still had money left in my account by payday, and I'd like to improve on that, start saving, and reduce my spending so I can afford to take a pay cut (which will almost certainly happen in a couple of years when I move out of the finance sector).
