That does sound like an enormous amount of work - considerably more than my erstwhile strategy of just avoiding using someone's name until someone else does and pretending to recognise them and make non-committal noises until I can figure out where I know them from.
I think on the whole moving to just admitting that I don't remember/recognise is going to make life easier though.
