wildeabandon: a picture of beetroot curry with green bean mallum and rice (curry)
A few weeks ago my sister and her boyfriend split up. This is a shame, as he seemed like a nice chap, but it was pretty amicable as these things go, and does mean that since she is now in a household of one, she's allowed to form a bubble, and since she lives about a mile down the road, we were the obvious candidates. So last night she came over for dinner and board games. A real live other person in our house! Someone new to cook for! It was /so/ lovely.

I made a couple of new recipes from Ottolenghi's Flavour, both of which came out really nicely. The main was Sweet Potato in Tomato, Lime and Cardamom sauce, and the side was Brussels Sprouts with Chestnuts, Shallots, and Grapes. Anne brought Raspberry Chocolate Pots for pudding, which was also delicious. Then we played a couple of games of Seven Wonders, and we even got to hug as she said goodbye. I am very much looking forward to spending more time with her over the next few weeks and months. We never deliberately planned to end up living in the same neck of the woods, but I am so delighted that it turned out that way by happenstance - we'd always gotten on reasonably well, but in the last few years that has blossomed into a really rich friendship, and I feel very lucky.

In other news, I am now on day 19 of my 13 day break from work, because the wheels of admin at my new client are grinding rather slowly. I'm definitely still at the "Oh gosh, it's lovely having so much time to catch up on my reading and cook more intricate recipes and practice chess and all the other things I've not had time for" stage, but I think if it goes on for more than another week or so it might start turning into "but I could probably do with making some money at some point fairly soon."

That is lovely. Also, that you are near and can share with someone close to you. I miss that -cooking for friends, hugs, the whole lot. But all this will pass. In the meantime, glad that you get a little bit of those things that are so important.
