1) Have you read more books, or fewer books, this past year than usual?
I haven't actually been keeping track this year, but I think more. I've been reading quite a lot of "popcorn" type fiction, mostly queer romance and YA fantasy, which pushed the numbers up, as well as the non-fiction which tends to go slower (mostly theology lately).
2) What book are you reading now (or what book did you read most recently)?
By myself I am reading Soul Friend (Kenneth Leech), a book about the practice of spiritual direction, The Iliad (Homer), and Arsène Lupin, Gentleman Cambrioleur (Maurice Leblanc). With other people I am also reading a New Testament Interpretation (Ian Boxall), which we're studying one chapter at a time and doing the exercises in it. ludy and I are reading Wee Free Men (Terry Pratchett) together, doing sacred reading practices like lectio divina or imaginative contemplation to explore the text more deeply. Finally, and I'm not sure if it counts exactly, because I'm not reading cover to cover, I'm spending a fair amount of time reading the Bible (various).
3) What is the best book you read in the past few years?
Oof - that's a tough one. I think it might be Poverty of Spirit, by Johannes Metz, which was recommended to me on my last retreat at St Beuno's. It's a slim volume expanding on the meaning of "Blessed are the poor in spirit" in the beatitudes, which I found simultaneously challenging and comforting.

5) How big is your to-be-read pile (or list)?
Vastly, vastly more than I will ever get round to reading... I tend to have about half a dozen books on my "to read soon" list, but even those sometimes get displaced by something else before getting read.
