Gloomhaven
Jan. 16th, 2022 07:35 pmThis Christmas I got Gloomhaven as a gift for
obandsoller and
robert_jones. I felt a bit cheeky doing so, as it ends up being sort of a gift for me as well, but it's been sufficiently successful that I've decided not to worry. We've played it five times so far, which is considerably more time than we'd usually spend gaming in the three weeks or so since we opened it.
Jesse (our neighbour) said he'd seen it described as "like D&D, but the DM is in the box," which feels like a reasonably fair description if your experience of D&D is closer to the hack and slash end of the scale from there to freeform roleplay. I'm impressed with the balancing so far. We failed on our first attempt at the first scenario, but only just, then won the following three games by the skin of our teeth. The latest game is the only one where we won fairly comfortably, and we were joined by Jesse for that one, so I'm wondering if it's tuned slightly more forgiving with four players than three. One of the neat things about it is that although it's a legacy game, you can swap characters in and out of the party, so it's not reliant on being able to get the same group together every time.
It's lovely to have a household activity that we're all really enthusiastic about doing together.
