wildeabandon: man with briefcase (career)
So I've got myself an Ello account - same username as this. I've also got some invites if anyone wants one. Like many, I'm a little sceptical that it'll actually take off and lure people away from facebook, but we'll see. It has been pointed out by a few people that Dreamwidth actually has quite a lot of the benefits over facebook that Ello claims (no adds, no selling your data), as well as rather more features, and there's been various lamenting over the fact that hardly anyone still posts here/on livejournal, and I'm as guilty of that as the next person, so I might start making an effort to post a bit more.

I think part of what puts me off is that on here I feel the need to craft posts carefully, and say deep and meaningful things, but actually, just posting some life updates wouldn't go amiss. Something I've become very much aware of over the last few years is how infrequently I see the people I don't live with compared to when I lived in Cambridge, or even shortly after I moved to London, when I was going out a lot more. I've realised that just like my mother I don't tend to enjoy large gatherings of people, especially if I'm not hosting, so parties aren't really a thing I do anymore. Even my closest friends I only manage to see once every month or two if they live in London, and less if they're further away. It is, I think, a very different sort of closeness, built on years and trust rather than the passionate intensity of my youth (oh dear lord I sound ancient). But yes, that does seem to mean that I don't have nearly as much sense of what's going on in other people's day to day lives, nor share nearly as much of my own.

I'm in much the same boat. In fact, I've just bitten the bullet and created a DW account as a result. I can't promise to post much -- but maybe more than the one-post-per-year I've managed on LJ lately?

I share your inhibition about posting. It's apparently both universal and very silly. I'd much rather read trivial updates here than on LJ!

What's Ello for? I guess I could create an account to namespace-grab...

[I'm reminded a little of diaspora, which never really took off]

I'm trying a bit harder to LJ things, even little things.

I get the invite email, but the create an account box refuses any password I care to type in (the little circle remains red, and I can't click on "create account") :-(

With a different browser (which I had to dig out from under a rock), it turns out someone's taken my usual handle anyway (which is presumably why the form wasn't happy under firefox, it was just showing red on the wrong row). What a strange bug.

I'm really enjoying getting back to LJ and DW (crossposting from DW, generally). Yay for you posting regularly, and yes, life updates from you are definitely something I want to read!

I like Ello so far, but I have no idea if it'll go the distance. It definitely won't if it doesn't bring in privacy settings relatively soon. If it does? We shall see, I guess. It seems worth a try, and I think the big rush of people joining over the last couple of days does indicate how eager people are to find alternatives to Facebook.

It would be really lovely if you posted here more. I for one appreciate general life updates just as much as carefully crafted, deep and meaningful posts. I think [livejournal.com profile] siderea has some really good insight into how frequent, supposedly "trivial" posts help to build community.

Given that I shun Facebook, anything in it for me?

I am trying (with intermittent success) to put short bits as well as longer posts here. I love reading other people's brief thoughts or diary bits or whatever, as well as longer posts, so I'm working on the assumption that other people might like that too.

I still use DW/LJ and I too need to post short things as well rather than worrying about length. I've decided I CBA with Ello cos I don't think it'll take off and I already struggle with too many social media thingies but hope to see you here and it works well for you.
