I'm really bad at going to bed at a sensible time. I tell myself that I need to be in bed by 11.30, and with the lights out and trying to sleep by midnight, but as that time rolls around there's always an urgent need to play just one more level of my game, or read just one more chapter of my book. Last night was particularly bad, and I didn't make it to bed until nearly five, which when I'm getting up at sevenish is not something my body can cope with now I'm no longer quite so young as I once was. Usually it's better than that, but one-thirty or two is not uncommon, and I'm starting to resent being tired all the time.

Anyone else struggle with this, and if so, any suggestions more useful than "apply more willpower"?

One of the things I've found about taking (over-the-counter, mild) sleeping medication temporarily to adjust sleeping patterns is that it takes little willpower to swallow a pill, and then you're committed to going to bed in the next half-hour (separate from and in addition to any actual pharmacological effects)

I am that most perverse and hated of creatures: a morning person, so around 9pm I start yawning and thinking bed would be nice. However, this post and comment thread on Offbeat Home and Life seems to contain lots of useful tips for your situation http://offbeathome.com/2014/05/go-to-bed-alarm

Just to reassure you, this is not the time I usually get up on a Sunday morning. I woke up and had trouble getting comfortable, so I decided to get up rather than disturb Alec.

Oh, _yes_.

I have tried:

3 alarm clocks (one of the "run away and hide" wheeled variety) on the basis that if I get up on time presumably I will eventually be knackered at bedtime. (Not successful).

An anti-alarm to go to bed. (Not successful).

A pre-anti-alarm to stop spodding and sit in bed with a drink and a book, or something relatively dull like that. (Occasionally successful).

Booze. (Doesn't put me to sleep anymore.)

Without wishing to be indelicate, engaging in a little manual relief between the anti-alarms. (Quite successful, but stoated libido means rarely applicable).

I think that's about it.
