2016; 2015; 2014; 2000-2009
Was 2017 a good year for you?
For me personally, yes, very much. Obviously the world of politics is a gigantic trashfire in ways that are quite scary, but I am in the immensely fortunate position of not being personally affected in any serious way, and in fact, my own life just keeps getting more and more awesome.
What did you do in 2017 that you'd never done before?
Bought a house, managed a team, sang on stage(not counting childhood), drew for pleasure, organised a readthrough weekend.
Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I still don't do resolutions per se, but my main 'self-improvement' type goal was to spend less, and I failed miserably, so I'll be trying that again with renewed vigor this year. I'm also planning to run a marathon later in the year.
Did someone close to you give birth?
No.
Did anyone close to you die?
No.
What countries did you visit?
Scotland, The Netherlands
What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?
Again, political sanity would be nice. Or at least some more signs of movement in that direction.
A new romance with someone local.
What events from 2016 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
The Piskies voting to allow same-sex marriage, and performing in my first big concert with the LGMC.
What was your biggest achievement(s) of the year?
Getting my most recent contract at work, and doing it well.
What was your biggest failure(s)?
[redacted]
Did you suffer illness or injury?
No.
What was the best thing you bought?
That'd probably be the house... But Hamilton tickets and a meal at the Araki are both serious contenders.
Whose behaviour merited celebration?
The Scottish Episocopalians and the Australian public for voting to bring us closer to marriage equality in various ways.
Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Even more than usual, various politicians. On one occasion, my own.
Where did most of your money go?
House, unsurprisingly.
What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Singing! House! My new job! Hamilton! Singing! Singing makes me so happy you guys!
Compared to this time last year, are you...
i. Happier or sadder? Astonishingly, still happier. I mean, I keep thinking I'm hitting the cap of how happy it's possible to be, and then something in my life gets more awesome and I realise that nope, there are higher vistas out there.
ii. Richer or poorer? Richer, although not as much richer as I should be considering my income.
iii. Healthier or iller? Healthier.
What do you wish you'd done more of?
I'm not really sure. I mean, lots of things, but none of them at the expense of any of the others. I feel like I've got my life pretty well balanced right now.
What do you wish you'd done less of?
Spend money on stuff I don't really need.
How did you spend Christmas?
In Yorkshire with my parents, both my sisters plus the youngest's partner, and Ramesh. Much like last year it was quiet and lovely.
How was your religious year?
Spiritually quiet, logistically hectic. My faith is feeling quite comfortably settled now, but I've taken on quite a lot at St John's, and I'm slightly concerned that I might be letting myself get so tied up with the administration that I lose sight of what it's all really about. I haven't started seeing my spiritual director again since I got back to London, and that's something I should probably make an effort to do soon.
Did you fall in love in 2018?
Not with anyone new, but I fell harder than ever for my darling
obandsoller and found myself even more hopelessly twitterpated with the endlessly charming
leonato.
How many one-night stands?
None. Quite a lot of first dates, but none with any real spark. But nowadays I'm generally not that interested in going to bed with someone unless there's enough connection that I expect it'll be likely more than a one-night thing.
What is the best thing you created in 2017?
Maybe bread? My sisters got me a one-day breadmaking course as a Christmas present last year, and since then I've been making my own sourdough every couple of weeks, and it's really quite good.
What was your favourite TV program?
The Good Place, by a country mile.
What was/were the best books you read to?
Conciousness Explained, Daniel Dennett; Octavia Butler's entire back catalogue; Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehesi Coates
What were your favourite musical discoveries this year?
Singing! I've not actually done much in the way of listening to new music this year, so there's nothing that stands out overwhelmingly.
What did you want and get?
A house. A management job. Forgiveness
What did you want and not get?
Enough self-control not to need the forgiveness.
What was/were your favourite film/s this year?
Get Out. If we can also count theatre then Hamilton, obviously.
What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?
I was 36. We were in Amsterdam, and went round the Van Gough museum and then out for dinner. It was really nice.
How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2016?
Androgynous, sparkly
Who and what kept you sane?
Again, I think I mostly kept myself sane, although of course it's easier when my life is full of so many wonderful people. Singing has definitely improved my sense of well-being.
Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Last year I said Daveed Diggs, and I think I'm gonna stick with that for another year.
What political issue(s) stirred you the most?
I think I'll just repeat last years "I wasn't really stirred enough - too much burying my head in the sand and not knowing what to do."
Who did you miss?
Many people, but especially
hjdoom and
leonato
Who was the best new person you met?
I don't think I could pick just one! So many wonderful people in the LGMC.
Have you changed your hairstyle?
A bit, although mostly fine-tuning of the same general concept. It's changed colour a couple of times though, and is currently the brightest bright red I think I can get away with at work.
What are you looking forward to most in 2018?
Thronescamp, Francegour.
Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017?
I am better at motivating myself to do hard things for the people I love than I am at doing them for myself.
