I've just managed to persuade a printer that wasn't behaving to work again. I realise that this is hardly the world's greatest achievement, but whilst I'm generally reasonably adept with computers themselves, I have pretty much a hate-hate relationship with printers.
I couldn't get it to work last week, and ended up printing pewsheets on Robert's printer, which I can't reasonably do long term, so this time I printed out one copy and took it with me, intending to photocopy it if I couldn't persuade the printer to actually print. And initially it didn't, but I fiddled with settings, and whilst not managing to fix the root problem (which is that it's determined to take paper from a drawer that doesn't exist), I did find that opening and closing one of the other drawers immediately after sending the print job makes it work. I am more pleased with myself than is entirely reasonable.

Date: 2021-11-07 03:45 pm (UTC)From:Every actual-geek fixy clever person I know hates printers with a passion. Even the good ones which have ethernet and speak postscript... Often because Microsoft Windows and drivers are involved tbh... That and drivers which should work just don't... Our 1990s Laserjet 4000 series thing crashes if you use HP's universal driver! *shrug*
My mum routinely just buys a new printer whenever hers start being stupid (rich people problems) which means I have to do remote or f2f tech support of a new printer hellbeast every time I visit! Wireless printers just multiply the problems of "wireless voodoo pixiedust" and printers...
