I was expecting this story to go rather differently. About a year ago I signed up for an annual subscription to Slate Magazine, mostly so that I could read the extra bits of Dear Prudence, because I'm a complete sucker for advice columns. I've enjoyed reading it, but had decided that it wasn't worth renewing the subscription as I'm trying to be a little bit more circumspect with spending, what with the plan to take half of the next three years off work at the same time as paying a small fortune in course fees.
But being me, by the time I actually thought "Oh, I should check that it doesn't auto-renew", it had in fact done so three days previously with a non insubstantial price increase. And I checked my email, and lo and behold there was a notice a month or so ago with subject "Important news about your Slate plus subscription", in which they told me about the price increase and reminded me that it was about to renew. "Bugger!" I thought. "I don't have a leg to stand on. That's a wodge of cash that I won't see again."
But in the spirit of optimism I emailed them to ask if it was too late to cancel, and they refunded the fees no questions asked. So although I have now cancelled my subscription, I have lots of warm fuzzy feelings towards them, and do enjoy a lot of their content, so consider this a recommendation.
