wildeabandon: Comedy tragedy masks (drama)
On Thursday I went to see La Cage aux Folles at the Regent's Park Open Air theatre with [personal profile] leonato, who was down in London for a conference. It was good to catch up on everything that's been going on with him, and particularly to see that he seems to be enjoying life a lot more again. He has filled it so full of rehearsals that there's little time to catch his breath, a state of affairs that I have a certain sympathy with, but he seems to like it that way.

The show was fabulous. I love the relationship between the two leading men - it's so warm and affectionate but also passionate and sparky, and it's imperfect and human with bickering and teasing, which makes it feel so much more real than just a fairytale. There are some stonking songs - 'I am what I am', of course, but other standouts are '(A little more) Mascara', Song on the Sand, and Best of Times. The choreography is stunning - clever, funny, and full of spectacle. But outside the big dance numbers, there's a deliberate sanding down of the polish. When Zaza is interacting with the audience, it doesn't feel like a big budget West End show, but the slightly haphazard, slightly gaudy, but still rather grand little club that La Cage aux Folles is supposed to be, and to me, that felt like home.
